Fairfax (Virginia) Police began investigating after an employee of the zoo told them he had put the wallaby in a crate for the purpose of medical treatment.
The employee later found the empty crate next to a 5-gallon water bucket, then found the wallaby, dead, in a dumpster. He told investigators that the wallaby was wet inside a trash bag.
Mogensen, the director of the zoo, told investigators that she used the drug "Beauthanasia" to euthanize the animal.
Investigators say the zoo and its staff are not authorized to use the drug.
Mogensen was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.
The investigation is continuing.
